Cochise arms lead way for sweep of Park University-Gilbert (JV)
DOUGLAS, Ariz. --- The Apaches continued their home stretch Tuesday afternoon, with a doubleheader against the Park University-Gilbert Buccaneers (JV). Cochise entered the day coming off of a conference series win against Arizona Western last weekend.
Tuesday, February 25th (Game 1, 7 innings): Cochise 5, Park University (JV) 0
It did not take long for the Apaches to get going, as they got the scoring started in the 1st with a Sawyer Fech RBI single to drive in Francisco Laya. Kenneth Rhein led off the 2nd with an infield single and later scored on a passed ball. Fech added another RBI single in the bottom of the 3rd, which put Cochise up 3-0. In the bottom of the 6th, Angel Orozco walked, stole two bases, and then came across and scored off an error. That same inning, Kevin Blanco scored off a T.J. Shaw single. Apaches pitching had no issues with the Bucs lineup, led by starter Daniel Martins, who went 3 innings with one hit allowed and 3k's. Sotaro Ishida tacked on another 3 innings with 5 strikeouts, followed by Collin Smith, who finished off the 7th with a scoreless frame.
Tuesday, February 25th (Game 2, 7 innings): Cochise 4, Park University (JV) 3
Cochise found themselves down in the early going, until a Kenneth Rhein double in the 2nd brought Richard Gutierrez in to score and tie things up. On the flipside of a 3-1 game in the 5th, Andrugh Yee ripped a double to left to score T.J. Shaw and Tyson Owens, once again evening the score. The Apaches were able to gain the lead in the 6th on a T.J. Shaw sacrifice fly. Sam Pitts started things on the mound for Cochise, going 2 innings, allowing one run unearned, and striking out 4. Jose Pimentel followed with an inning, allowing one earned run. Olmedo Quezada provided a scoreless 4th inning. Osvaldo Guzman got one out in the 5th before handing it off to Daniel Gomez for 2 2/3 scoreless innings, closing things out.
