Cochise Women’s Soccer Opens Season with 1-1 Draw Against Western Wyoming
STERLING, Colo. (Aug. 21, 2025) — The Cochise College women's soccer team opened its 2025 campaign with a 1-1 draw against Western Wyoming Community College on Thursday afternoon in Sterling, Colorado, in a match hosted by Northeastern Junior College.
Freshman Samantha Herrero gave the Apaches an early advantage, scoring unassisted in the 15th minute for her first collegiate goal. Cochise carried the 1-0 lead into halftime after limiting Western Wyoming's opportunities.
The Mustangs pulled even just after the break when Kaydence Barber converted in the 50th minute. Despite chances on both ends, neither side was able to break the deadlock over the final 40 minutes.
Cochise goalkeeper Marissa Tamayo had a strong outing, recording six saves while facing seven shots on goal. The Apaches managed six total shots in the match, with Herrero, Diana Taddei, Maria Ibarra, Jocelyn Navarro, and Tiia Kuhmonen among those creating opportunities.
With the result, Cochise begins the season 0-0-1.
The Apaches return to action on Friday, Aug. 22, at 2:00 p.m. MST, when they take on host Northeastern Junior College in Sterling.
