Cochise Women’s Soccer Clinches Region I Tournament Berth with One Match Remaining
DOUGLAS, Ariz. (October 22, 2025) — With yesterday's evening win over Yavapai and one regular-season game still to play, the Cochise College women's soccer team has officially clinched a berth in the 2025 NJCAA Region I Tournament. The Apaches, who own an overall record of 8-5-3 (4-4-1 ACCAC), will likely enter postseason play as the No. 3 seed and is projected to travel to No. 2 Eastern Arizona College for a semifinal matchup on Wednesday, October 29, at John Mickelson Field in Thatcher, AZ (time TBD).
Season Overview: Consistency, Character, and Growth
Cochise's 2025 campaign has been defined by steady growth and a series of statement performances. The Apaches opened the year with an explosive non-conference run through Colorado, posting decisive wins over Northeastern JC, Otero College, and Trinidad State, outscoring opponents 21-0 across three matches.
Conference play brought new challenges but also showcased Cochise's resolve. Highlights included a 2-0 upset victory over then-No. 6 Phoenix College and a 3-1 Sophomore Day win over Yavapai College, where standout sophomore Ana Velazquez netted two goals.
The Apaches' balanced attack has been led by Diana Taddei, who recorded two hat tricks this season and currently ranks among the top 20 in the nation in goals scored. Complementing her up front are Velazquez, Tiia Kuhmonen, and Samantha Herrero, each contributing key finishes in conference play. Team captain Stephanie Vazquez-Ceron added one of the most memorable moments of the year — a 40-yard strike against No. 2 Arizona Western that snapped the Matadors' season-long shutout streak.
Defense Anchored by Depth and Discipline
The goalkeeping trio of Marissa Tamayo, Julia Vigorito, and Monserrat Alzate has been vital to Cochise's success. Their combined efforts produced several shutouts and kept the Apaches competitive against top-ranked opponents. Defensively, the back line has remained organized and disciplined, allowing Cochise to stay in the hunt in a conference dominated by nationally ranked programs.
One More Test Before the Tournament
Before turning to postseason play, Cochise will close the regular season with a non-conference matchup at the College of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas on Tuesday, October 21, at 11:00 a.m. MST. The game will provide a final tune-up and an opportunity to maintain momentum heading into the Region I Tournament.
