Cochise Women’s Soccer Dominates Plainsmen for First Win of Season
STERLING, Colo. (Aug. 22, 2025) — The Cochise College women's soccer team secured its first victory of the 2025 season in decisive fashion Friday afternoon, rolling past Northeastern Junior College 7-0 on the road in Sterling, Colorado.
The Apaches wasted no time applying pressure, scoring five times in the opening half to put the match out of reach early. Chayton Barron opened the scoring in the sixth minute, before freshman standout Samantha Herrero netted back-to-back goals in the 12th and 13th minutes. Herrero now has three goals through her first two collegiate matches.
Cochise added insurance later in the half as Diana Taddei scored in the 35th minute, followed by Jennifer Hernandez in the 42nd, sending the Apaches into the break with a commanding 5-0 lead.
The scoring continued after halftime, with Hernandez striking again in the 48th minute and Ana Velazquez closing the tally in the 78th minute to seal the 7-0 shutout.
Cochise controlled the match from start to finish, outshooting Northeastern 31-1, including 20 shots on goal. Goalkeeper Julia Vigorito anchored the defense, recording the clean sheet without facing a shot on frame.
The match carried extra meaning as it was played against former Cochise volunteer coach Josh Burton, now the head coach at Northeastern Junior College.
With the victory, Cochise moves to 1-0-1 overall and continues its early road trip. The Apaches will travel to La Junta, Colorado, to face Otero College on Sunday, Aug. 24, at 12:00 p.m. MST.
