Apaches snap four-game skid with home win over Yavapai
DOUGLAS, Ariz. — Cochise College Women's Basketball put together its most complete performance in weeks Saturday afternoon, rolling past Yavapai College 86–54 at the Cochise Stronghold Gymnasium to snap a four-game losing streak.
The victory improves the Apaches to 6–15 overall and 2–4 in ACCAC play.
Cochise set the tone early, opening the game on a 21–5 run and never looking back. The Apaches led 21–5 after the first quarter and 44–16 at halftime, holding Yavapai to just 15.4 percent shooting in the second period while forcing multiple empty possessions and turnovers.
Forward Malika Goutay delivered a dominant outing, finishing with 21 points and 14 rebounds on 7-of-9 shooting, including a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Cecy Burruel added 13 points and five assists, while Noa Mikami chipped in 13 points, knocking down three three-pointers.
Lesline Penge provided strong interior scoring off the bench with 11 points, and Gaby Oliver contributed nine points and five assists as Cochise recorded 21 assists on 34 made baskets.
The Apaches controlled the paint throughout the afternoon, outscoring Yavapai 46–26 inside, winning the rebounding battle 46–25, and converting 17 second-chance points. Cochise also shot an efficient 47.9 percent from the field and 85.7 percent from the free-throw line.
Yavapai was led by Kayla Bailey with 14 points and Amani Arraf with 11, but the Roughriders never recovered from the early deficit.
