Cochise drops home matchup to No. 3 Eastern Arizona
DOUGLAS, Ariz. — Cochise College Women's Basketball faced a tough test Saturday afternoon, falling 59–46 to No. 3 ranked Eastern Arizona College in ACCAC conference action at the Cochise Stronghold Gymnasium.
The loss moves the Apaches to 5–14 overall and 1–3 in conference play.
Cochise opened the game with energy, taking an 11–10 lead after the first quarter, but Eastern Arizona answered with an 18–7 second-quarter run to build a 28–18 halftime advantage.
The Apaches kept pace coming out of the break, matching the Lady Gila Monsters 18–18 in the third quarter, highlighted by strong interior play from Malika Goutay and Cecy Burruel, but Eastern Arizona regained control in the fourth, outscoring Cochise 13–10 to seal the road win.
Burruel led Cochise with 15 points, shooting 5-for-13 from the field and adding four rebounds while playing all 40 minutes. Goutay recorded a double-digit rebounding effort with 11 boards, along with nine points, six blocks, and a steal in a dominant defensive performance in the paint.
Gaby Oliver finished with nine points, while Hannah Dibadjou added eight points and five rebounds. Sophomore center Lesline Penge contributed three points and nine rebounds off the bench.
Cochise shot 35.2 percent from the floor but struggled from long range, finishing 1-for-11 from three-point territory. Turnovers also proved costly, as the Apaches committed 20, leading to 17 points for Eastern Arizona.
Eastern Arizona was led by Danaeja Romero-Ah Sam with 14 points and Esmeralda Enriquez with 11, improving to 16–1 overall and 3–0 in ACCAC play.
