Cochise’s Lesline Penge Named NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Player of the Week
DOUGLAS, Ariz. — Sophomore center Lesline Penge has been named the NJCAA Division I Women's Basketball Player of the Week, recognizing her dominant performances for Cochise College during a challenging non-conference stretch that included matchups against nationally ranked competition.
Penge averaged 16.5 points per game, 12.5 rebounds per game, and collected 17 blocks over a three-game span at the Texans Classic in Levelland, Texas, where the Apaches faced South Plains College and Midland College. Her impact extended well beyond the stat sheet, as she anchored Cochise's defense, controlled the glass, and provided consistent inside scoring to keep the Apaches competitive throughout the weekend.
She opened the tournament with a monster 18-point, 19-rebound, 4-block effort against host South Plains, then followed with 18 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 blocks in a narrow 61–58 loss to Midland College. Across both contests, Penge shot over 60% from the field and averaged double-digit rebounds for the sixth consecutive game.
For the season, Penge is averaging:
-
11.1 points per game
-
15.8 rebounds per game (ranking among the NJCAA national leaders)
-
3.8 blocks per game
-
42% field goal shooting
Penge, a returning sophomore from South Africa, has been a force in the paint since the season tipped off and continues to establish herself as one of the top frontcourt players in the NJCAA.
