Cochise Drops Battle of the Boot Opener to Shelton State, Moves to 2–4
TWIN FALLS, Idaho — Cochise College Women's Basketball opened the Battle for the Boot Classic on Thursday evening but fell to a powerful Shelton State squad, 90–49, inside the College of Southern Idaho's gymnasium.
Shelton State — ranked among the nation's perennial top programs — applied heavy pressure from the opening tip, surging to a 31–13 first-quarter lead. The Buccaneers shot 52% in the first half and controlled the offensive glass, finishing with 66 total rebounds compared to Cochise's 43 .
Despite the loss, Cochise saw several strong individual performances. Freshman guard Gaby Oliver led the Apaches with 18 points, including four three-pointers, battling through tight defensive coverage to provide steady scoring throughout the night .
Freshman Cecy Burruel added 9 points, while sophomore Lesline Penge anchored Cochise inside with 12 rebounds, 7 points, and 3 blocks against one of the most physical frontcourts they've faced this season .
Freshman forward Hannah Dibadjou chipped in 7 points and 14 rebounds, continuing her consistent interior presence on the glass .
Cochise struggled from the field, shooting 29.7%, while Shelton State generated 35 points off Cochise turnovers and 20 second-chance points on the night .
Shelton State was led by a balanced attack with four players scoring 15+ points, including Ella Wheeler and Nadia Norfleet, who posted 16 apiece.
Despite the setback, the Apaches maintained composure in the fourth quarter, outscoring Shelton State 18–13 in the final frame and showing strong defensive adjustments.
