Cochise Rallies Past Central Arizona for Key Conference Win
Douglas, Ariz. — Cochise College men's basketball continued its climb in ACCAC play Saturday afternoon, defeating Central Arizona College 95–86 at Stronghold Gymnasium to earn its fourth conference victory of the season.
The win lifts the Apaches to 14–10 overall and 4–5 in conference play, giving Cochise momentum as it heads into the final stretch of the regular season.
After building a 45–37 halftime lead, Cochise maintained its offensive rhythm in the second half, shooting over 50 percent for the game and answering every Central Arizona run with timely baskets and trips to the free-throw line. The Apaches went 21-for-23 at the line, helping seal the victory down the stretch.
Freshman Emmanuel Jo Samuel led all scorers with 27 points, knocking down four three-pointers and converting all five of his free-throw attempts. Naeem Colston followed with a perfect shooting performance, finishing 11-for-11 from the field for 24 points while also pulling down 10 rebounds.
Point guard Jhace Johnson recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 assists, adding 12 rebounds to post a triple-double effort. Freshman Davon Jones chipped in 15 points, and Teron Murray added three points and four rebounds as Cochise placed four players in double figures.
As a team, Cochise shot 55.7 percent from the field and 40 percent from three-point range, while winning the rebounding battle and outscoring Central Arizona in the paint. The Apaches also committed just eight turnovers, limiting second-chance opportunities for the visitors.
Central Arizona was led by Brayden Gant, who finished with 31 points, and Nathan Wanjohi, who added 18, but the Cougars were unable to overcome Cochise's balanced scoring and efficiency in the second half.
With the victory, Cochise strengthens its position in the conference standings and looks to carry the momentum on the road.
The Apaches return to action Wednesday, Feb. 11, traveling to Prescott to face Yavapai College at 7:30 p.m.
