Cochise Sweeps Colorado Northwestern in Doubleheader, Improve to 6–1
The Cochise College Apaches continued their strong early-season momentum on Friday, sweeping a doubleheader against Colorado Northwestern Community College at Bo Hall Field to improve to 6–1 on the 2026 campaign.
Cochise earned an 11–5 victory in the opener before securing a dramatic 3–2 walk-off win in game two, capped by a seventh-inning hit from Gavin Mesa.
Game One: Cochise 11, Colorado Northwestern 5
The Apaches opened the doubleheader with an offensive surge, scoring 11 runs on six hits while drawing 10 walks in an 11–5 victory, as shown in the official box score.
After falling behind 4–0 in the third inning, Cochise responded immediately with a six-run rally in the bottom half of the frame to seize control of the game. The Apaches added four more runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
Jorge Cardenas powered the offense, driving in three runs and hitting a home run. Zach Cavanaugh added two RBIs, while Sawyer Fech, Shiryu Sato, Chase Chapman, and Landon Blais each contributed run-producing hits. Gavin Mesa reached base four times with two walks and scored twice, helping spark the rally.
On the mound, Shane Hooper earned the win in relief after throwing 4.1 innings and allowing just one run. He followed starter Noah Miller, who worked 2.2 innings, and helped stabilize the game after Colorado Northwestern's early scoring.
Game Two: Cochise 3, Colorado Northwestern 2
The second game featured a tightly contested battle that ended in walk-off fashion, with Cochise edging Colorado Northwestern 3–2 in seven innings.
After trailing 2–0 early, the Apaches tied the game in the third inning and remained locked in a pitcher's duel into the final frame. In the bottom of the seventh, Anthony Montez reached base and set the stage for Gavin Mesa, who delivered the game-winning hit to seal the sweep.
Mesa finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBIs, including a double and a home run, and was responsible for all three Cochise runs. Chapman also had a strong showing with two hits, while Cavanaugh and Andrugh Yee added base hits.
On the mound, Landon Blais started and worked two innings before handing the ball to Austin Cushman, who was dominant in relief. Cushman tossed five scoreless innings, striking out four and earning the win while also recording the save to preserve the victory.
Strong Start Continues
Through seven games, Cochise has shown depth, resilience, and balance across the lineup and pitching staff. The Apaches have combined consistent offensive production with strong bullpen performances, helping them build a 6–1 record early in the season.
The walk-off victory in game two highlighted the team's composure and ability to execute in pressure situations as conference play approaches.
