Apaches maintain first place in ACCAC with a win over Gila Monsters.
The Cochise College Men’s Basketball used a balanced offensive scoring attack and solid defense to defeat conference rival Eastern Arizona College for the third time this Spring ’21 season. The Apaches had just defeated the Gila Monsters Tuesday 80-69 in Thatcher. Cochise also blasted EAC 118-70 in their first meeting in February at Cochise College.
Cochise had five players score in double figures, with Stephen “Tank” Byard and Jalun Trent each pouring in 14 points. Brian Rios and Johnny Garcia added 13 and 11 points, respectively. Patrick Samoura chipped in 10 points and added 10 rebounds.
“We could not be more proud of our team effort this week. To play the same team back to back in 72 hours is not easy, Head Coach Jerry Carrillo said. “Our guys continue to respond with great effort and great “Termism.” They are a pleasure to coach.”
“Coach Derek Lane has us prepared for our defensive assignments. We were able to get quality stops when we needed tonight,” added Quay Lausa/Gentry, a sophomore guard.
*The victory pushed the win streak to 7 straight ACCAC regular-season wins over Eastern Arizona College.
*Going into the game last night, the Apaches had statistical leaders in various individual categories in the ACCAC: Stephen “Tank” Byard leads the ACCAC in scoring at nearly 21 ppg, Patrick Samoura leads the ACCAC in rebounding at 10 rpg. Jalun Trent leads the ACCAC in assists at 6.3 assists per game.
