Patrick Samoura, a forward of the Cochise College men’s basketball team, has been selected to represent Region 1 on the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Student-Athlete Council.
“I have never imagined I could be a part of something this big,” said Samoura. “It is an honor, and I am truly grateful.”
Serving on the NJCAA Student-Athlete Council provides student-athletes like Samoura an opportunity to gain leadership skills. In addition, he will assist with various Council decision-making, propose new ideas, attend meetings, and participate in the annual NJCAA Convention.
Dr. Bo Hall, Cochise College Athletic Director, said, “Patrick maintains a 4.0-grade point average. He has shown great maturity and is an ideal representation of what the NJCAA wants from a student-athlete.”
Samoura, a sophomore from the Czech Republic, was also selected for the 2019-2020 NJCAA All-Academic First Team. In May, he will graduate with an associate of general studies degree. “This selection means a lot to me,” continued Samoura. “As a connection between student-athletes and the NJCAA, I hope to help resolve issues that student-athletes face on a daily basis.”
The Council aims to provide student-athletes from all 24 NJCAA regions the opportunity to engage and grow while attending their two-year institution, at a national level. Throughout the year, the Council will meet via Zoom to discuss student-athletes’ topics and concerns at the two-year college level today.
The committee’s goals include advancing NJCAA student-athlete voices, creating new opportunities for the student-athlete experience, encouraging student-athlete opinions on current or proposed legislation, and providing recommendations based on student-athlete involvement.
