Women’s Soccer season ends

Cochise College women’s soccer season ends prematurely. The #1 Lady Apaches hosted the #4 Arizona Western Matadors in the region semi-finals on Thursday. After an impressive turnaround after starting the season 1-4, the Lady Apache’s finished on top of the ACCAC earning a first-round bye. The Matadors defeated the #5 seed Pima Community College to reach the semi-finals against Cochise.

Coming into the match, Cochise and Western were fighting injuries causing both teams to play shorthanded. Cochise came out with intensity in the first half but was unable to score. Going into the half, both teams had only two shots on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Brianna Guzman and her defense shut down many opportunities for the Matadors. In the 62nd minute of the match, a penalty kick was awarded to Western off an unlucky handball in the box. Linda Obare netted the kick giving Western a 1-0 lead. Cochise fought hard in the remaining minutes but was unable to equalize. Final: Western 1, Cochise 0.

The heart-breaking loss after the best finish in program history brought an end to the season for the Lady Apaches. Arizona Western will face the #3 seed Paradise Valley in the Region Finals.
