With a sweep of Paradise Valley Community College on Tuesday, April 23 Cochise College earned themselves the 2019 ACCAC regular season conference championship. This will be the second time in the last three years that the Apaches have achieved this accomplishment and the third time in the previous five years.
In game one freshman RHP Isiah Campa started on the mound looking to improve his record on the year to 8-0. Campa has been a workhorse for the Apaches all year as he pitched well in Tuesday’s game like he has all year. He would pitch six innings only allowing five hits, two runs with five strikeouts. Sophomore RHP Pedro Perdomo came in for the save as he closed out the game in the seventh inning. Freshman SS Jimmy De Leon had a great game defensively and was able to get on base three of his four at-bats. Freshman OF Steven Saunders would go 2-3 with an RBI as the Apaches would go on to win game one by a score of 4-2.
Game two was all about the offense for Cochise as they would explode for 14 hits and 10 BBs as a team. The Apaches pitching staff struggled to allow 12 hits in the nine-inning game but did their job to get some big outs late in the game. Paradise Valley CC would jump out to a 7-4 lead in the seventh inning, but the Apaches would come on strong late as they have all year. Cochise would go on to score 11 runs between the seventh and eighth inning to secure their 15-8 win. As an offense, five Apache hitters would have multi-hit games. Two hitters would lead the way with sophomore OF George Sutherland going 3-5 with two runs scored and 2 RBIs in the game and freshman OF Steven Saunders going 2-5 with 3 RBIs in the game. This comes from behind win would secure Cochise College’s first place regular season finish in the ACCAC.
The Apaches will now head to Central Arizona College on Saturday, April 27 for their last two regular season games as they look to find out who they will host for the Region I Semi-finals beginning next Thursday, May 2.
