#7 nationally ranked Cochise College got another road split against a conference opponent. On Saturday, March 30 the Apaches traveled to Mesa Community College for a doubleheader matchup against the Thunderbirds. Sophomore RHP Jake Rogers started on the mound for the Apaches in game one. Rogers had excellent pitch ability in his outing throwing six strong innings only allowing five hits and one walk to go with his seven strikeouts. Unfortunately, poor defense in the 6th inning allowed Mesa CC to score the only run of the game as they would go on to take game one by a score of 1-0.
The Apaches looked to bounce back in game two as they were hungry to get a split on the road. Although the offense for the Apaches was nonexistent in game one, they came ready to play in game two. Sophomore C Luke Jacketta got the Apaches going with an RBI double in the 3rd inning. Right behind him in the lineup freshman, SS Jimmy De Leon would go on to hit a 2 RBI single down the right-field line. The Apaches never looked back in this game as they would take a 4-0 lead into the 5th inning. Local Buena High School standout Steven Saunders has had a very productive freshman year so far for the Apaches, but his performance in game two of the Mesa CC doubleheader was quite the performance. Saunders would go on to hit a home run in the 5th inning and then would hit another one in the 9th inning to solidify the Apaches 7-2 win over the Thunderbirds.
Cochise is now 32-7 overall with a 16-6 conference record as they get back into action at home this Tuesday, April 2 against Pima Community College.
