Cochise College baseball took on Western Oklahoma State for a nonconference matchup on Thursday, March 21. Western Oklahoma State is currently ranked #9 in the country in the NJCAA Division II Baseball Rankings. Freshman RHP Nik Kamages started on the mound for the Apaches as five Cochise pitchers would go on to throw in the game. The five Cochise pitchers would go on to strike out 10 Pioneer hitters allowing only two runs in the game. Sophomore RHP Pedro Perdomo would get the win in this one throwing two shutout innings with three strikeouts while not allowing a Western Oklahoma State player to reach base. Offensively, the tone was set in the game with freshman OF Steven Saunders 2-run home run blasted over the left field fence in the first inning. Saunders would end his day 2-3 with three runs scored, 2 RBIs and the big HR. Right behind Saunders in the batting order freshman Hernan Yanez also had a tremendous offensive game; going 3-4 in the game with 2 RBIs and two doubles. Cochise College wins the game by a score of 9-2.
The Apaches play again this Saturday, March 23 against Gateway Community College. This conference doubleheader will be played at South Mountain Community College and will begin at noon.
