The Cochise College baseball team traveled to Yuma on Tuesday, March 19 to take on Arizona Western for a conference doubleheader. Freshman RHP Aaron DeGroot started on the mound for the Apaches and struggled to get Western hitters out in his five innings of work. Arizona Western’s starting pitcher Koeiman held Apache’s offense scoreless while only allowing three hits and 3 BBs in the game. Arizona Western scored seven runs in the first five innings of game one and would go on to win by a score of 10-0.
Cochise looked to bounce back in game two of the doubleheader with freshman RHP Isiah Campa on the mound. Campa came ready to pitch and did his job keeping Cochise in the entire ball game. He would go on to pitch 7+ innings with eight strikeouts, only allowing two runs and four hits. Isiah’s effort on the mound would be rewarded in the top of the seventh inning. The Cochise offense, which struggled to create any momentum again, scored three runs, all with two outs, to take a 3-2 lead. Freshman INF Elliot Rodriguez would get the big 2 RBI single down the left field line to tie the game 2-2. What would end up being the game-winning run in this game was scored thanks to a wild pitch that allowed sophomore UTL Justin Lee to score. This lead was kept safe by sophomore RHP Jesse Meyer who would come in to throw 2+ innings of work to pick up his 3rd save of the season. The Apaches would steal this win away from the Matadors by a score of 3-2.
The Apaches play again for a non-conference matchup against Western Oklahoma State at home on Thursday, March 21. Cochise will play another conference doubleheader this Saturday, March 23 against Gateway CC. Both of these games will be played at South Mountain CC however as Gateway CC has some work done to their field.
