Women’s Basketball Headed Back to Nationals

For the third year in a row, the Cochise College women’s basketball team will be headed to Lubbock, TX for the National Championship Tournament.  The Apaches earned the berth by winning the Region 1 Championship game over Central Arizona, 64-48.   It was a back and forth game until the fourth quarter when the Apaches outscored the Vaqueras 19-3.  Awa Keita led all scorers with 21 points and 12 rebounds.  Yemiyah Morris also added 20 points and 12 rebounds.

The Apaches are 28-3 on the season and for the third season in a row are conference and region 1 champions.

“This was a great team victory,” coach Laura Hughes said.  “We didn’t play our best basketball, but we fought till the end.  I was thrilled with us winning the rebounding battle and holding them to 48 points.  We were having some execution issues on the offensive end, but defense and rebounding are what win championships.”
