Cochise College took on the Vaqueros of Central Arizona College on Tuesday, February 19. This game was impressive for the Apaches from the start. Freshman RHP Aaron de Groot’s put on an exciting performance on the mound by dominating Vaquero hitters all game. Aaron de Groot pitched a complete game shutout versus Central surrendering only one hit and striking out eight Central hitters in the game. Offensively the Apaches scored early with four runs in the bottom of the first inning thanks to freshman OF Steven Saunders 3-run home run hit over the center field wall. Sophomore DH Max Christoff also produced offensively going 2-3 at the plate with 3 RBIs and two 2Bs hit in the game. The Apaches won with a score of 9-0.
Game two of the doubleheader required the Apaches to make a push late in the game. Central AZ jumped out early on the Apache pitching staff taking a 7-0 lead by the fourth inning. Cochise College scored only one run in the first six innings of the game and saw themselves down 8-1 going into the bottom of the seventh inning. The Apaches scored two runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to cut the Vaquero lead down to five runs. The Apache bullpen came up big with solid performances by freshman RHP Isiah Campa and sophomore RHP Pedro Perdomo. In the bottom of the 8th inning, the Cochise College offense exploded for five runs and tied the game at 8-8. This would not have been possible if it wasn’t for sophomore OF George Sutherland’s big game-tying 2 RBI triple with two outs in the bottom of the 8th inning. The game would go into extra innings with the Apaches finding themselves down once again in the game. The Vaqueros would take a 9-8 lead in the top of the 10th inning, but Cochise College was up for the challenge. In the bottom of the 10th inning freshman, SS Jimmy De Leon would lead off the inning by reaching on an error. Freshman C Hernan Yanez would come up with two outs in the inning and hit a single to right field. Sophomore OF George Sutherland would come up again in the game with the tying run on base, and George would come up clutch again with a game-tying RBI single. Next up to bat was sophomore DH Max Christoff who came to bat with the winning run at third base and two outs. Christoff would battle in his at-bat and would go on to rip a walk-off RBI single to center field. The final score of this come from behind victory was 10-9.
The Apaches stay hot and extend their win streak to 12 games. Cochise plays again at Glendale Community College this Saturday, February 23.
