Women’s basketball clinches ACCAC championship

#21 Cochise College women’s basketball clinched the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference regular season championship with a 79-32 victory over Chandler Gilbert.  This is the third conference championship for the Apaches in a row.  The Apaches clinched the championship with three regular season games still to play.  Along with their conference championship, the victory means they will host the Region 1 final on March 8 at 7 p.m.

Cochise jumped out early with a 23 to 6 first-quarter lead and continued to build on that through the game.  The Apaches were led in scoring by Raena Suggs 22 points.  Suggs was a blistering six for eight from the 3-point line.  Awa Keita added 16 points and nine rebounds.

“I am really proud of this team,” Coach Laura Hughes said.  “They have worked hard the entire season to get this championship.  They have consistently proven to be one of the best defensive and hardest working teams in the country.  I know they are not satisfied and have much more to accomplish this season.”

Cochise continues to be ranked #21 and lead the country in scoring defense holding opponents to 45 points per game.  The Apaches are now 23-3 on the season and 18-1 in conference play.
