Cochise baseball beats Eastern AZ twice to open up Conference play

This past Saturday, February 16 Cochise College opened up conference play against the Gila Monsters of Eastern AZ.  The two teams squared up for a doubleheader on a windy day in Douglas, AZ.  Sophomore RHP Jake Rogers started on the mound in game one, and he threw a gem.  Jake Rogers pitched five strong scoreless innings striking out five Gila monster hitters and only allowing four hits.   Offensively the Apaches brought the power in game one.  Cochise College would go on to blast four home runs in the game and score a total of eight runs.  Freshman SS Jimmy De Leon, freshman C Hernan Yanez, sophomore DH Max Christoff, and sophomore UTL Justin Lee all hit home runs in the game to help win game one of the doubleheader by a score of 8-1.

Game two of the doubleheader saw the Gila monsters jump out to a 5-2 lead in the third inning, but the Cochise offense answered back with five runs of their own in the bottom of the third to take a 7-5 lead.  Eastern battled back to make an 8-7 lead in the fifth inning eventually.  Cochise was up for the challenge and scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 10-7 lead.  There was no looking back after that as the Apaches would go on to win the game by a score of 13-10.  On the mound, the relief efforts by sophomore RHP Jesse Meyer and freshman RHP Drew Hayes were enough to hold off Eastern from a late comeback.  Offensively freshman OF Steven Saunders led the way going 3-4 in the game with three runs scored, 2 RBIs and a triple in the game.

The Apaches now have a ten game win streak and look to continue it this Tuesday, February 19 against Central AZ for a conference doubleheader at home.
