Apaches survive a scare from the Gila Monsters

Cochise College extends win streak to 10.

The Cochise men’s basketball team won in an overtime thriller last night vs. Eastern Arizona. After an incident that had the game pushed back a day, the two conference foes met up at Thatcher High School to compete in an ACCAC match up.

The Apaches were able to take a halftime lead of 46-37 after a run of stops that led to easy buckets in transition. Darnelle Robateau headed the charge on the defensive end for the Apaches as he had four steals for the game and one to cap off the first half run to an easy layup. The second half favored of the Monsters. The monsters found their way to the foul line 17 times in the second half and 37 times for the whole game. It was a back and forth contest that accumulated seven ties and eight total lead changes. The Apaches were able to prevail in overtime with a final score of 94-84.

The Apaches were led in scoring by Jamaure Gregg who had 22 points and shot 10/16 from the field. Gregg also added seven rebounds to his stat line. Darnell Robateau ended the game with a double-double. The lead guard for the Apaches finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Mahki Morris also finished with 18 points, and Naje Smith added 12 of his own for the Apaches.

“This was a good team win tonight. Our guys needed to win a game like this to keep their urgency to win a championship at a high level. There are still some things we need to clean up as a team, but I am happy that these guys were able to pull this one out,” Head Coach Jerry Carrillo said.
