Cochise College opened up for a home series this past weekend against Utah State Eastern CC of the Scenic West Athletic Conference. The two teams matched up for a doubleheader on Friday, February 1 and a doubleheader on Saturday, February 2.
Game 1 of the series was low scoring which came down to the Cochise pitchers limiting Utah State Eastern CC to only four hits and one run in the game. Sophomore RHP Jake Rogers started on the mound for the Apaches and kept his defense in the game by throwing a lot of competitive strikes. Sophomore RHP Jesse Meyer came in for the relief of Rogers and picked up his first save of the year. Meyer pitched 2+ shutout innings and secured the Apaches first win of the weekend. Cochise would go on to win game one by a score of 2-1.
Game 2 of the series had more offense than game one and forced Cochise to make a late push in the game to win the second game of the doubleheader. Cochise jumped out to an early lead in this game taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning but would lose the lead in the sixth inning. Utah State Eastern CC battled back and took a 5-4 lead in the top of the sixth inning forcing the Apaches to answer back. Cochise baseball was up for the task and would go on to score five big runs between the seventh and eighth inning. Offensively sophomore UTL Justin Lee scored three crucial runs in the leadoff spot. Also, sophomore OF George Sutherland, freshman 1B Ryan Magdic, and freshman OF Steven Saunders all had clutch hits in the game, and all recorded 2 RBIs. The game could not have been won without the impressive relief appearance on the mound by freshman RHP Diego Jordan. On the mound, Jordan was able to throw 3+ innings allowing only one run and getting some big outs with runners on. The Apaches would go on to get this come from behind win by a score of 9-6.
On Saturday game one of the doubleheaders was very similar to the game one from the previous day. Sophomore RHP Steven Ortiz started on the mound and did what was asked of him. Ortiz ended up throwing five shutout innings while striking out five Utah State Eastern CC hitters. Freshman RHP Drew Hayes was next to pitch on the mound and competed for three strong innings striking out five while only walking one. It wasn’t until the bottom of the eighth inning that the Cochise College offense was able to break this one open. Freshman OF Steven Saunders would be the hero in this one and hit the walk-off triple in the right-center gap to win the game by a score of 2-1.
Game 4 on the weekend finally saw the Apaches offense break open, and do it in a big way. Cochise would score ten runs in the fourth inning and go on to a run-rule Utah State Eastern CC in 7 innings by a score of 13-0. Enough can’t be said about freshman RHP Nik Kamages and his start on the mound as he picked up his first win of the year throwing four innings and striking out five hitters while only allowing two hits. Offensively sophomore UTL Justin Lee had two hits on the day with 4 RBIs thanks to the grand slam he hit into the Cochise trees over the left field fence. Sophomore INF Toby Allred ended the game 2-3 with 3 RBIs. The Apaches came ready to hit this game finishing with 12 total hits, three 2Bs and one grand slam in the game.
The Apaches get back into action this weekend on the road for a four-game set at El Paso Community College. The Apaches will be playing at the home field in Douglas next Saturday, February 16 as they begin conference play against Eastern Arizona.
