Cochise College Apaches run past the Coyotes 82-58.
The Apaches were able to notch a second win in a row to start the new year after a dominating victory vs. the 1st place Chandler-Gilbert Coyotes. The Apache’s pressure defensively forced the Coyotes into ten first-half turnovers that led to easy baskets in transition. The start of the game for the Apaches on the defensive end was as good as it has been all season long as they held Chandler-Gilbert without a field goal their first eight possessions of the game.
The Apaches were leading on the offensive end by Chris Whitaker with 24 points off 10 of 19 shooting. Whitaker was backed by a balanced offensive attack from the four other starters. Darnell Robateau was able to cash in 13 points along with five rebounds and 5 assists. Jamaure Gregg and Justus Rainwater contributed 12 and 11 points respectively; missing a combined two shots. Mahki Morris added 11 points and high energy on the perimeter defensively.
“Our defensive effort tonight was great. I thought our team came out with a mindset to dominate on that end of the floor,” said Coach Jerry Carrillo. “Everyone came out and gave great effort, and we were able to get those baskets in transition. When we added good ball pressure, fight catches and rebound; we became a good team.”
The Runnin’ Apaches take on South Mountain Community College at 7:30 pm on Saturday, January 12 at the Stronghold Gym in Douglas, AZ to maintain their first-place standing in the ACCAC.
