Six Apaches in double figures
The Cochise men’s basketball team extended their winning streak to three games after Saturday’s game versus Eastern Arizona College at the Stronghold gym. Another balanced attack for the Apaches was evident as there were six players in double figures. Cochise came out on fire to start the game. Mahki Morris began with hot shots by hitting three straight threes in the first minutes of the game. The team was able to follow suit as the Apaches walked into the locker room at halftime with a 61-45 lead shooting 62% from the field. The second half wasn’t too different. Cochise ended the game with a shooting percentage of 59% which sealed a 106-90 win against the talented Gila Monsters.
Three Apache players hit the 20 point mark. Sophomore Mahki Morris led the way with 23 points on eight of 11 shooting while freshman Chris Whitaker and Naje Smith added 20 points each. Smith added 11 rebounds to notch his third double-double of the season and shot eight of 10 from the field on top of four blocked shots. Sophomore Darnell Robateau nearly had a double-double with 12 points and nine assists. Freshman, Milan Szabo scored 12 points while sophomore Jamaure Gregg scored 11 points.
“We were able to run our stuff effectively. I thought if we got out and ran we would be able to get easier looks and our guys did just that,” Head Coach Jerry Carrillo said. “Mahki (Morris) set the tone tonight making early shots, and Naje (Smith) was able to come off the bench and give great productivity.”
Cochise takes a trip up to Mesa this coming Wednesday, December 12 for a final game before winter break. The Apaches are now 9-2 overall and 4-1 (1st place) in ACCAC play.
