Apaches come out fast and efficient.
The Cochise College Men’s Basketball team opened up the 2018-2019 season at the Apache Stronghold Gym with a solid performance vs. Hillcrest Prep’s Post Grad team. Cochise jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead and did not look back. The Runnin’ Apaches took off after an opening possession dunk by sophomore Justus Rainwater to take an impressive 66-28 lead into halftime and did not let up after intermission. The Apaches were able to continue their efficient shooting and extend the lead in the second half.
Cochise had a balanced attack with seven players in double figures. To lead the way sophomore Mahki Morris had 26 points including a deadly 80% from there going four of five. Sophomore Jamaure Gregg started the season perfect from the floor going 8-for-8 and finishing with a double-double at 20 points and ten rebounds. Freshman guard, Chris Whitaker was also excellent from the field with 20 points on 75% shooting. Sophomores Justus Rainwater and Darnell Robateau were huge in the effort as Rainwater controlled the paint with power dunks and vicious blocks and Robateau having a great floor game being one rebound shy of a triple-double. The Apaches finished the night shooting 67% from the field.
Cochise Head Coach Jerry Carrillo, said, “We came out with great energy. We had defensive readiness and defended with great integrity. Our first half defensive field goal percentage was 25.5%. I believe that set the tone for the rest of the game.”
