This past week Cochise College Baseball played games at home. On Tuesday they split with Gateway Community College (CC) losing the second game in extra innings. As a result, the Apaches were motivated to get back into action against Eastern Arizona CC on Saturday.
Sophomore RHP Juan Cabrera earned his eighth win overall and his sixth conference win in the first game on Saturday. He threw five innings allowing only one run on two hits while striking out five Gila Monster hitters. The Apaches were sure to give Juan support scoring in six of the seven innings played. Freshman OF George Sutherland led the way for the offense going 3-4 at the plate with two runs scored, 2 RBIs and a triple over the right fielders head. Overall the Cochise offense had six players end the game with two or more hits. The strong performance by the Apaches results with a 9-1 win over Eastern Arizona CC.
The second game was a different kind of game as it was a close ball game all the way to the end. Enough cannot be said about Sophomore RHP Anthony Mayorga’s performance on the mound. He came into relief on the mound and was a big reason the Apaches would go on to win the game. He threw 6.1 innings allowing no runs and striking out eight Gila Monster hitters. The Apache offense was quiet all game only scoring one run in the first seven innings but came alive when it was vital. The Apaches had to score two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to win the game, and they did just that. Cochise chances looked slim when they had two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning but the players continued to believe. The offensive star of the first game Freshman OF George Sutherland came up to bat in a tied game with two outs and the winning runner on third base. As George had all game, he competed and eventually went on to hit a walk-off base hit to win the game. It was a great come from behind walk-off win for the Apaches!
Cochise gets back in action on Tuesday, April 17 for two away games at Arizona Western. They play home again next Saturday, April 21 against Yavapai College.
