The Cochise College baseball team was excited to get back in action after losing two games at home last Tuesday to Scottsdale Community College.
They dueled up against Chandler-Gilbert Community College this past Saturday for a conference doubleheader. The Apaches were ready to compete as they got off of the bus. Sophomore RHP Juan Cabrera pitched a gem and went on to win his third straight game. He pitched six strong innings only allowing three hits, one run and was able to strike out six CGCC hitters. Sophomore RHP Aaron Vernon played strong, throwing the last inning of the game. Offensively, the Apaches utilized a group effort totaling 14 hits in the game with four Apaches hitters having multi-hit games. Of those four hitters Sophomore OF Alexander Marco led the way going 3-4 at the plate with 2 RBIs, two runs scored, and a big double down the left field line. The Apaches won game one of the doubleheader by a score of 13-1.
Game two of the doubleheader was very similar to the first game. The Apaches pitching and offense were on fire. It all started on the mound for the Apaches as Sophomore LHP Jonathan Ellison threw deep into the game throwing six innings while allowing 0 runs and striking out nine. Offensively two Cochise hitters stood out with their big contributions in this game. Freshman INF Justin Lee went 2-4 at the dish with three RBIs, three runs scored and hit his fourth HR of the year. Freshman C Harrison Engstrom finished the day 2-4 with three RBIs and a big double late in the game off of the center field wall. The Apaches eventually went on to win the game by a score of 11-0 in seven innings.
This week the Apaches have two home doubleheaders, the first being against Gateway Community College this Tuesday, April 10 and the second one versus Eastern Arizona this Saturday, April 14.
