Due to make-up games against Yavapai this week the Apaches were forced to play six conference games in five days. Four of the six games during the week were also on the road, but the Apaches came out on top of this mid-season challenge.
On Tuesday, March 27, Cochise College played a home doubleheader against Phoenix College. The Apaches would go on to win both games by a score of 5-3 and 5-4. Both games were close from start to finish, but the Apache offense and bullpen did enough to come out on top. In game one, sophomore RHP Juan Cabrera would pitch just well enough to lock in his fifth win of the year. This would go on to be an important start to the week for the Apache baseball program. In game two, home runs by sophomore DH Jake Walter and freshman C Harrison Engstrom ended up being the deciding factors in the 5-3 victory for the Apaches.
On Thursday, March 29 Cochise College had to head to Prescott, AZ for a make-up doubleheader against Yavapai College. Their games had to be rescheduled due to snow in Prescott earlier in the year. In game one the Apache offense came ready to play, exploding for 14 hits in seven innings. Freshman 2B Justin Lee and freshman George Sutherland OF led the way finishing the game with three hits each. Overall the Apache offense had five players have a multi-hit game. Cochise ended up winning game one by a score of 6-4. The offense for the Apaches did not stop in game two as they finished game two with 12 hits and 25 total base runners. Almost all of the damage came in the top of the sixth inning when the Apaches scored nine runs. Three freshmen, 2B Justin Lee, SS Audie Nunez, and C Harrison Engstrom all had successful games at the plate; finishing the game with at least two hits, one run and one RBI. Cochise would eventually hold on to win the game by a score of 11-9.
On Saturday, March 30, the long week continued for the Apaches as they headed to Pima Community College. Sophomore RHP Juan Cabrera stepped up in a real big way. In game one he pitched a complete game shut-out and got his second win of the week on the mound. He only gave up four hits and ended up striking out three Aztec hitters in the game. The Apaches won game one of the doubleheader 3-0. In game two, the Apache offense took the pressure off of the pitching staff by scoring ten runs and winning game two 10-4. The game was close until the top of the ninth inning when the Cochise offense pulled away scoring four crucial insurance runs. Freshman 2B Justin Lee set the stage for the game with a leadoff home run. Freshman OF Torren Brozovich also did well at the plate going 2-5 with three RBIs with a double and triple.
The Apaches now have an eight-game conference win streak that they look to continue at home next Tuesday, April 3 against Scottsdale Community College.
