Region 1 Champions: Apaches Knock off Central 78-63, head back to nationals

The Cochise College Women’s Basketball team won their second consecutive Region 1 championship beating Central Arizona 78-63.  The Apaches were down by 9 at one point in the second half but had two big scoring quarters to pull away from the visiting Vaqueros.  With this victory, the Apaches earn an automatic berth in the National Championship Tournament.

The Apaches were led by Region 1 Tournament MVP Deezha Battle’s 17 points.  Awa Keita also added 17 points, while Yemiyah Morris chipped in with 13.

The Apaches are 29-2 overall, ranked 6th in the country and on a 23-game winning streak.  The 29 wins in a season is a school record.

“I am so proud of this team and all they have accomplished,” Coach Laura Hughes stated. “We have a never give up attitude.  It could have been easy to shut down after getting down in the third quarter but we continued to fight one possession at a time.  Our toughness was the difference in this game.”
