On Saturday, March 10 Cochise College Baseball took on the red hot Thunderbirds from Mesa Community College. The two teams battled a doubleheader during a rainy day in Mesa, Arizona.
During game one, Sophomore and right-handed pitcher, Aldo Fernandez competed for a little over 4 innings but ended up getting the loss on the mound. The Cochise offense was stifled by the MCC pitching and the Apaches eventually lost the first game 6-0.
Game two was a different story. The Apaches bounced back nicely with a tough performance on the mound by freshman and right-handed pitcher, Jake Rogers. He pitched for just over 5 innings and allowed only one earned run. His grittiness was followed up on the mound by sophomore, right-handed pitcher, Brett Matthews. Matthews threw the remainder of the game and helped secure the win for Cochise. Matthews also had to make some big pitches in key situations and he was able to do just that as well as secure his 4th save of the year.
Offensively, freshman designated hitter Alex Stinnett led the way. He finished the day going 3-5 with a huge 3 RBI home run in the 3rd inning. Defensively, the Apaches had a few miscues but they were able to minimize the damage turning two big double plays late in the ball game. The Apaches held on to win the game by a score of 6-5.
The Apaches hope to use this momentum as they head to Tucson, Arizona this week of Spring Break. They will play six games in 3 days before they get back to ACCAC play again on March 20th for two home games against Glendale Community College.
