#14 ranked Cochise College women’s basketball defeated the Central Arizona Vaquera’s 56-53 in a thriller at the Douglas Campus Stronghold Gymnasium. A matchup of two of the top offensive teams in the conference turned out to be a low scoring defensive battle. The Vaquera’s went into the locker-room with a 31-28 halftime lead. However, the Apaches took over the lead by outscoring the Vaquera’s 16-5 in the third quarter. Central made a push in the fourth quarter but it was not enough as they missed a 3 pointer at the end of regulation for the Apache victory.
Cochise was led by Mamita Diagne’s 20 points, while Awa Keita added 17 points for the game.
Coach Laura Hughes said, “I told the team before the game it was going to come down to rebounding and who was the most aggressive team. We held our own on the boards, showed great ability to stay with things and came out with the victory.”
The Apaches are now 19-2 overall, 12-1 in ACCAC play and on a 13 game win streak.
The Apaches go back on the road to Eastern Arizona College on Wednesday, January 31. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
