Apaches use a balanced scoring attack to rout the Artichokes
The Cochise College men’s basketball team returned home to the friendly confines of the Stronghold gymnasium Saturday night after suffering their first loss of the season Wednesday night in Yuma to Arizona Western College. The Apaches enjoyed their return home with seven players scoring in double figures in the rout of over Scottsdale CC last night.
Cochise was led by Sophomore Chaz Mack who had another double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Caleb Highley also had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds in the victory. Sophomore point guard Bryan Urrutia almost had a triple-double last night as he dominated the game with 12 points, 15 assists, and 8 rebounds. Sophomores, Naquwan Solomon and Ludovic Kader added 16 points and 11 points respectively. The Apaches also had two Freshmen come off the bench to bolster the offensive attack as Mahki Morris had 13 points and Jamauree Gregg chipped in 10 points in the winning effort.
The Apaches are tied for first place in the rugged ACCAC with a 4-1 mark in conference play and a 9-1 record overall.
“I was really proud of how our guys came out and set the tone early last night. We really set the tone from the tip-off with a great defensive effort.” Cochise Head Coach Jerry Carrillo. “Our post players, led by Caleb Highley defended the pick and roll with great determination and effort from the get go”.
Sophomore Forward Caleb Highley said, “We came out and practiced very hard on Friday after our game at Arizona Western. We wanted to take the game to them and have great energy on defense.”
Stat of the Game
The Apaches held the Artichokes to 32.1% shooting from the floor in the first half and gave up only 25 first half points.
The Apaches extended their home winning streak to 29 games dating back to Feb. 3rd. 2016.
The victory gives head coach Jerry Carrillo 497 total wins at Cochise College in 22 plus years at the helm.
The Apaches will take a few weeks off over winter break. Cochise will be back in action at the Phoenix College Holiday Classic with three straight games at Phoenix College beginning Thursday, Dec. 28. The Apaches will play the following schedule in the Phoenix Holiday Classic: 12/28 vs Howard College @ 3 p.m., 12/29 vs. Regina University (Canada) @5 p.m. and 12/30 vs. Midland College @ 2 p.m.
