Apaches jump out to a 23 point first half lead to rout visiting Gila Monsters

The Cochise College Men’s Basketball team used a strong defensive first half performance in cruising to a twenty point win over conference rival Eastern Arizona College Saturday night in the Cochise Stronghold Gymnasium. Cochise was able to control the pace and tempo in mounting a 48-25 lead at halftime. The Apaches then pushed the lead to 74-41 with ten minutes to go in the game. Cochise then emptied the entire bench in route to their 8th straight win of the season.
Cochise was led by Sophomores Naquwan Solomon and Chaz Mack, who each had 20 points in the victory. Sophomore point guard Bryan Urrutia continued his solid play with 12 points and 9 assists in the lopsided win over the Gila Monsters. Freshman, Jamuare Gregg sparked the Apaches off the bench with a 17 point 13 rebound performance in leading Cochise to its third consecutive ACCAC win. With the win, the Apaches are now 8-0 overall and 3-0 in ACCAC play.

“I think our post guys really stepped up early in the game and defended ball screens with great integrity. Caleb Highley was just tremendous hedging ball screens and it really set the tone for us, and we defended so hard all night,” said Head Coach Jerry Carrillo. “Assistant Coach Derek Lane did a great job preparing our guys with the scouting report on Eastern Arizona.”

Sophomore Guard/Forward Naquwan Solomon said, “Coach Lane showed us what Eastern was going to run on offense, and we really stepped up and defended hard all night. We pushed the ball well and scored in transition”

Cochise held Eastern Arizona to 29% shooting from the floor in the first half.

The victory pushed the home win streak to 28 games for the Apaches.
Head Coach Jerry Carrillo now needs only 4 wins to reach the 500 career win mark/milestone at Cochise College.
