Apaches have six players score in double figures to run record to 5-0 on the early season
The Cochise College men’s basketball team used a strong first half performance to rout the visiting West Coast Wings from Phoenix, Arizona, in a non-conference clash Saturday afternoon. Cochise came out strong and controlled the game from the outset and built a 56-21 halftime lead.
Cochise was led by sophomore forward Chaz Mack, who tallied a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Cochise also had a strong performance from sophomore guard Bryan Urrutia who had 13 points and 11 assists. The Apaches also had strong performances from sophomores Caleb Highley and Naquwan Solomon who added 16 points and 13 points respectively. Freshman forward Jamaure Gregg came off the bench to add 16 points while freshman guard Mahki Morris chipped in 11points.
The win was the 25th straight home win for the Apaches, dating back to the 2015-16 season. Cochise went undefeated at home last season going 16-0 in the Stronghold gymnasium and has not lost at home since February 2, 2016. Saturday’s win was number 493 for Head Coach Jerry Carrillo in his 22 plus years as the Head Coach of Cochise College.
“Our guys really came out and defended well in the first half,” said Carrillo. “Our defense allowed us to get out in transition and allowed us to flow on offense. Bryan really pushed the ball well and got everyone involved.”
The Apaches will open up ACCAC conference play at home, on Tuesday, November 21 vs the Phoenix College Bears. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
