Apaches use strong defensive effort to defeat Bears in Stronghold
The Cochise College men’s basketball team opened conference play
with an impressive win over the highly touted Phoenix College Bears last night in
the Cochise Stronghold gymnasium.
The Apaches used a strong first half defensive effort to hold a 37-23 lead at half-
time. Cochise was able to fight off Phoenix College in the second have to pull off
the double-digit victory.
Cochise was led by forward Chaz Mack, who had his second straight double-
double with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore wing Naquwan Solomon had
20 points including two very big 3 point field goals in the second half. Sophomore
guard Bryan Urrutia chipped 11 points while Sophomore forward Caleb Highley
added 9 points and 15 rebounds for the Apaches.
“As a coaching staff, we were very impressed with how hard our guys competed
for 40 minutes last night,” said Head Coach Jerry Carrillo. “Our defensive effort was excellent.
Assistant Coach Derek Lane did an outstanding job with the overall scouting report of Phoenix and
our guys really responded.”
Cochise College forward Chaz Mack said, “It was a great team win. Phoenix College is a very physical team, and we
responded to the challenge. My coaches really showed a ton of confidence in my
ability to score the ball, and I was able to make plays when it counted.”
Stat of the Game
The Apaches outrebounded the Bears 47-29 and tallied 16 Offensive rebounds.
Note: The win gives Head Coach Jerry Carrillo 494 career victories at Cochise
The Apaches have now won 27 consecutive games at home, with the last home
loss coming on Feb. 3 rd 2016.
The Apaches will be traveling to Central Arizona College for an ACCAC match-up
on Wednesday, Nov. 29. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
