The Cochise College women’s soccer team dropped their home opener to the visiting Coyotes of Chandler Gilbert this past Tuesday. The Apaches looked to start off their 20th season in existence with a bang, but fell by the score of 2-0.
The Apaches and Coyotes traded blows in the first half with both teams creating chances in a back and forth half. The Apaches came closest to scoring in the 12 minute on a shot from Magali Brizuela (FR, Asuncion, Paraguay) on a cross from Crystal Munoz (FR, Douglas, AZ). The Coyotes were also able to create some chances but goalkeeper Kayla Birbeck (SO, Tucson, AZ) kept them at bay in the first half. The score was 0-0 going into the halftime interval.
The second half started with the Coyotes opening up the scoring in the 51st minute of a shot into the top corner just past the outstretched hand of Birbeck. Like the first half, the Apaches were able to create shots on goal and test the keeper from Chandler Gilbert. Unfortunately, the Coyotes added an insurance goal in the 67th minute off a near post goal. The Apaches continued to look for an answer and despite some last goal scoring chances, the match ended 2-0 to the visitors.
The Lady Apaches will look rebound when the host Glendale Community College on Saturday, August 26 on the Douglas campus. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 pm.
