Elenga says goodbye to Cochise

Women’s basketball player, Sophia Elenga, at the Cochise College Douglas Campus.

Sophia Elenga, an international student from Nogent Sur Oise, France, has been playing basketball for thirteen years. During her last two years attending Cochise College, Elenga was named Second Team All-American. She was also named a 2 time First Team All-ACCAC, 2 time First Team All-Region (Division 1) and led the team in points and rebounds at Cochise College.

Just after Elenga finished high school, she felt as if she needed to try something new. She wanted to play basketball and go to college.

Elenga explained how in France, college doesn’t have anything to do with basketball clubs,
“After high school, you have to make a choice,” Elenga explained. “You have to go into the club and try to be professional. You don’t have the option to continue studying.”

There were many colleges that Elenga applied to. She chose Cochise College because Cochise was the first college that she heard back from.

After being accepted, Elenga researched Cochise College and spoke with head coach Laura Hughes over emails about her potential. Elenga mentioned that Coach Hughes helps all of her players to become better people and better players.

The coach, team and college helped Elenga out a lot, especially throughout her first year when she didn’t know very much English.

Elenga had this to say about the Cochise College Douglas campus, “The campus is nice, I like my dorm, I like my bedroom, I like my roommate.”

After a successful two years at Cochise College, Elenga will be attending Arizona State University in the fall. Elenga brought up that she feels like she has to start all over again. She said that it feels weird knowing that she is leaving Cochise.

Elenga plans to play basketball professionally overseas after college. Once she is finished with her basketball career, she would like to go into sports broadcasting.
