Apaches came into Saturday hoping to extend their hot eight game winning streak to a nine game winning streak but the Coyotes had something to say about that as they snapped the winning streak in the 1st game Saturday afternoon, beating the Apaches 7-6. The Apaches would come back and win the 2nd game, 7-5.
In game 1 of the losing match-up the lead-off hitter Logan Bottrell did all he could. He got on 3 times for the 2, 3, and 4 hole hitters and only came around to score twice. Alexander Marco had another good game going 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI. Other than the 5 runs in the first two innings the Apache offense disappeared which led to the Coyotes having enough time to scratch and claw their way back into the game.
Juan Cabrera did not have an excellent day but still kept the Coyotes off balance on an offensive day. He went 4 innings gave up 8 hits 3 runs (3earned) while only walking two and striking out 8. Aaron Vernon had trouble shutting the Coyotes down. He did go only 1 1/3 allowing 4 hits, 4 runs (4 earned) and striking out 2.
In game 2 of the match-up the Apaches were able to score in 3 different innings and capitalize on the Coyote mistakes. Luis Hidalgo was the leading hitter going 3 for 3 with 2 doubles and 1 RBI while scoring 2 runs. It was all about the pitching in this which kept the Coyote hitters from scoring. Brett Matthews had another good outing going 6 innings giving up 5 hits allowing 3 runs (3 earned) while striking out 5 and only walking 1, with that performance he was able to secure the win with an Alex Tovalin Save. Tovalin came in the 8th and pitching 1 1/3 innings giving up 1 hit and striking out 2 in the 5 batters he faced.
The Apaches continue their quest to the playoffs as they sit in 2nd place behind South Mountain. Cochise College is now 34-10 overall and 17-7 in the ACCAC. Come out and watch the Apaches at Gateway CC or follow them on Gamechanger!
