Cochise captures history

Cochise College women’s basketball team finished the 2016-2017 with a 28-4 record.

The Cochise College Women’s Basketball team finished their outstanding 2016-2017 season with a 28-4 overall record, which is the best record in school history! With a 19-3 conference record, Cochise earned the top seed in the ACCAC playoffs, and after dominating Arizona Western, 62-33, Cochise claimed their first Region 1 Division 1 championship in more than 30 years! On March 20th, the 21-seed Apaches played the 12-seed Wabash Valley College in the first round of the NJCAA Tournament in Lubbock, TX and routed WVC 96-75. The victory gave Cochise their first ever national tournament victory in the history of the program. But on March 22nd, the Apaches historical season came to an end after a loss to the 5-seed Salt Lake CC, 57-48.

Cochise College Women’s Basketball team also celebrated a pair accolades for two of its players and one accolade for Head Coach, Laura Hughes. Forward Sophia Elenga earned First-Team ACCAC and First-Team Region 1-Division 1. Guard Shannon Powell earned Second-Team ACCAC and Second-Team all-Region 1-Division 1. Sixth-year Head Coach, Laura Hughes earned her second ACCAC Coach of the Year by leading the 23rd nationally ranked Apaches to a 19-3 conference record and 28-4 overall record. Elenga earned her honors by averaging 12.4 points and 8.3 rebounds per-game. She scored a season-best 20 points on four different occasions this season and also collected 15 rebounds in a game versus Arizona Western on February 4th. Powell averaged 10.6 points and 5 rebounds a game for Cochise, and scored a season-high 21 points twice this season. She pulled down a high 10 of rebounds against Pima College on January 7th and had a season-high 7 steals on January 25th versus Phoenix College.
