Cochise Apaches took a 79-76 win over Mesa in the Region 1 Semifinals Saturday night.

Cochise led by 15 points at halftime. Four players scored in the first half: Shadeed Shabazz (14 points), Dallas Polk-Hilliard (11), Bryan Urrutia (10) Brandell Evans (9).

Mesa was a tough competitor and kept coming back in the second half. With 4:40 left in the game, Mesa managed to tie the score 72-72, and eventually lead the game 74-72 with four minutes left on the clock.

Brandell Evans intervened with a tough layup as the Apaches clung to a 76-74 lead with 2:34 left. The Apaches kept the lead for the rest of the game.

“It’s hard to beat somebody three times and we just beat them three times in the season,” Coach Jerry Carrillo said. “To beat a good team like that three times, hats off to our guys.”

The victory will send the Apaches to their third consecutive Region 1 title game today in Yuma against Arizona Western.

If the Apaches win another victory this Monday night, they will host the District round, and that winner will be on their way to the national tournament.
