All-Conference, All-Region and Coach of the Year

With the conclusion of the regular season, the Cochise College women’s basketball team will celebrate its playoff berth and a pair accolades for two of its players and one accolade for head coach Laura Hughes. Forward Sophia Elenga earned First-Team ACCAC and First-Team Region 1-Division 1. Guard Shannon Powell earned Second-Team ACCAC and Second-Team all-Region 1-Division 1. With a 131-51 coaching record at Cochise, sixth-year Head Coach, Laura Hughes earned her second ACCAC Coach of the Year by leading the 23rd nationally ranked Apaches to a 19-3 conference record and 26-3 overall record.

Elenga earned her honors by averaging 12.4 points and 8.3 rebounds per-game. She scored a season-best 20 points on four different occasions this season and also collected 15 rebounds in a game versus Arizona Western on February 4th. Powell averaged 10.6 points and 5 rebounds a game for Cochise and scored a season-high 21 points twice this season. She pulled down a high 10 of rebounds against Pima College on January 7th and had a season-high 7 steals on January 25th versus Phoenix College.

Cochise will begin its playoff run with a home game versus 2-seed Arizona Western on Friday, March 10th at 7 pm at Stronghold Gym. The two teams split their match-up during the regular season, with each team winning on the road. Arizona Western handed Cochise their first loss of the season, 64-62, on December 7th. Cochise got their revenge and beat the Matadors 59-45 on February 4th. The winner of Friday’s playoff game will be the Region 1, Division 1 Champion and will advance to the NJCAA Division 1 National Tournament in Lubbock, Texas, on March 20-25, 2017.
