Women’s basketball rolls past Scottsdale

After a rocky start, the Cochise College Women’s Basketball team defeated the Fighting Artichokes of Scottsdale CC 64-45 on Wednesday evening. Guard Shannon Powell filled the stats sheet with 14 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 1 block, while freshman guard Deezha Battle went 6 for 10 from the floor for 13 points.

Forward Tatyana McFarland had 3 steals to go along with yet another double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Sophia Anaya scored 9 points, Sophia Elenga 8 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, while freshman Jasmine Coleman pulled down 7 boards of her

own.

The Fighting Artichokes had Cochise on their heels for most of the first quarter as the score was 14-2 with 4 min left in the quarter. Cochise rallied back in the 2nd quarter but was still down 32-23 at halftime. The Apaches finally woke up in the 3rd and started playing their usual up-tempo style of play as they turned up the defensive pressure and held Scottsdale to only 5 points in the quarter while the home team scored 21 points. The trend continued the rest of the game as Cochise out-scored Scottsdale 41-13 in the 2nd half. Cochise won the rebounding battle 47-34 and shot 35% from the field vs 29% from Scottsdale.

Cochise will host Chandler-Gilbert on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at Stronghlod Gym.
