The Apaches dropped out of first place with a 76-74 lost to Arizona Western on Saturday night at The House in Yuma. Cochise got off to a hot start, jumping out to a 12-4 lead over Western. The Matadors battled their way back into the game and led the Apaches at halftime 32-27. The game came down to the final minutes seeing a lot of action. Cochise rattled off nine straight points to cut the Matador lead to 71-66 with 40 seconds left. Western’s Brandon McGhee sank two free throws to make it a three possession game, but Cochise’s Fredrick Porter answered with two free throws of his own. The Matadors missed four free throws, while Cochise missed shots for the next 20 seconds before Brandell Evans drained a three that cut the lead to 73-71, with less than 15 seconds to play. McGhee then hit two more free throws to push the lead back to four, but Evans hit a leaning three with less than two seconds left that made it a one point game. Western’s Torin Webb went 1-2 at the line with 0.7 seconds left, and on a Garrett Jackson inbound, Western guard Tyler Motley tipped the inbounds pass to start the clock and end the game. Cochise was led by Evans who finished with 21 points, and Bryan Urrutia had 20. Cochise will look to get back to its winning ways this Wednesday at home against Scottsdale with tipoff coming at 7:30p.m.
