Phoenix, Ariz — The Lady Apaches traveled to Rose Mofford Park on Thursday, September 24 to face the Gateway Geckos. The Apaches were looking to rebound from a 2-3 defeat to Glendale the previous Saturday.
The Lady Apaches got off to a good start, creating numerous chances down the left-hand side through Larissa Lee and Elia Mendoza. The fast start did not pay off, as the Geckos took the lead in the 38th minute off a counter attack.
Cochise looked to up the pressure in the second half to even the game and again threatened the goal with some long range efforts. The pressure applied by the Apaches finally paid off with a set piece goal.
Cochise won a free kick 35 yards to the right of the goal and Diana Medrano served a great ball into the box to Jessica Messer who scored into the bottom right corner on the full volley. The rest of the half remained goalless as both teams held firm in the back.
As the first overtime opened the Lady Apaches pressed with their best spell of the game with quick, incisive passing to get good opportunities on goal. Jessica Messer found the crossbar with a header from another set piece delivery later in the first overtime.
The game eventually petered out to a 1-1 draw. The Lady Apaches held a 12-5 advantage with shots on goal. On the other end Venecia Alvarez made 4 saves in the match.
